Colbert’s Previous ‘Letterman’ Job Offers

On Tuesday, David Letterman’s replacement as host of the "Late Show," Stephen Colbert, talked about a couple near-misses he had that could have landed him his future gig a lot earlier in his career. Way back in 1986, Colbert said he was offered an internship at Letterman’s old show on NBC. Then he did something very foolish - he turned down the internship because it was unpaid! Years later, Colbert and his writing partner submitted a writing packet to the "Late Show," but by the time Letterman called to chat about it, they had been picked up by "Strangers with Candy." It looks like the third time is a charm!
